Life Returns to Lake

Victoria (Australia):
Healthy fish have surfaced in Lake Modewarre almost a year after an unknown cause killed thousands of carp and eels and left the lake a dead zone.
Lakeside resident and lake management committee member Brian Gane said Melbourne anglers caught seven eels at the lake on Monday night, the first confirmed sighting of any fish life since the widespread kill last summer.
``Although extensive netting surveys have been conducted by the Department of Primary Industry since the fish kill, the most recent surveys were indicating that no fish survived the kill,'' Mr Gane said yesterday.``But fish have now been caught in Lake Modewarre, a bucket load of eels, seven in total to 9pm last night. I'm over the moon.''
He said the visiting anglers showed committee members their catch as the group's inaugural meeting drew to a close on Monday night. The eels, caught off the boat harbour breakwater, were in good condition and showed no sign of disease or abnormality.
