Missing Japanese Mini-sub 'north of Sydney'
The Australian
___________
Sydney (Australia):
The makers of a TV documentary claim the third and missing Japanese mini-submarine from the attack on Sydney Harbour 63 years lies on the bottom of the ocean at the mouth of Broken Bay, 20km north of the harbour.
M24: The Last Sunrise, shown on Foxtel last night, claims the two-man submarine travelled north rather than south or sinking to the bottom of the harbour as long believed.
The documentary says the M24 lies east of Lion Island at Broken Bay, near Pittwater. Mystery surrounded its whereabouts after it was tracked leaving the harbour but failed to reach the mother sub, waiting off Botany Bay.
It had fired two torpedoes at the cruiser USS Chicago - one of which hit the converted Manly ferry HMAS Kuttabul, used as a sailors' dormitory, killing 21 aboard.
