The disappearance of an urn containing the ashes of a DeWitt County man has left police stumped and family members grieving a second time.
The grief that struck Gaye Mix after the death of her husband, Ricky, in June was renewed in late October when she returned home to find the ashes missing.
"I lost him four months ago, and now he's been stolen," Mix said of her late husband.
Mix said she noticed the ashes missing as she passed through the garage on the way into her home after work Oct. 26."I looked up to see if Rick was there, and he was gone," she said.
The urn containing Mix's ashes was on a shelf in a specially decorated room of the garage, completed by friends shortly before Mix's death at age 45. A dedicated Dale Earnhardt fan, Mix wanted a place to display his photographs and other race memorabilia.
Mix has told police that she believes members of her late husband's family may have information about the missing ashes, an accusation denied by relatives.
