Rare Whales in CC Bay Baffle Researchers
WOAI
____
Texas (US):
Researchers are baffled why a gigantic Northern Right Whale, one of the most endangered creatures on the planet, suddenly popped up with her calf in the middle of Corpus Christi Bay, one of the busiest industrial ports on the Gulf coast.
"Its a most extraordinary event," oceanographer Tony Amos of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas told 1200 WOAI news today. "They're so rare in the Gulf of Mexico, they're almost unknown in the Gulf of Mexico, why they would come into the bay, I don't really know."
In fact, the Right Whale got it name because 19th century fishing ships considered the huge, slow moving creatures to be the 'right whale' to hunt, and they have been nearly hunted out of existence.
