Index, Washington (US):
A mystery trucker likely saved a Monroe man from burning to death after his pickup truck burst into flames early Thursday on U.S. 2.
A witness told police the truck driver extinguished a fire that erupted from the pickup after it crossed the centerline, smashed into a car and careened off the road, Washington State Patrol trooper Tim Crane said.
Investigators said the pickup driver, 40, may have dozed off behind the wheel before crashing into a car driven by a Skykomish teenager just before 5 a.m.
The unknown trucker disappeared before troopers arrived at the crash east of Index. Instead, troopers found the car and pickup in a ditch about 120 feet apart, and the Monroe man and the Skykomish girl lying on the ground away from their vehicles."It was a horrific crash. The vehicles were mangled," Crane said. "The investigating trooper was surprised there wasn't a fatality."
The drivers told investigators they don't know how they got out of their tangled vehicles. It's unlikely they were able to pull themselves out of the twisted wreckage, Crane said.
