New Delhi (India):
An official panel probing the reported death in 1945 of legendary freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose has finally submitted its report to the government - and it may throw up a bombshell.
The commission of inquiry headed by retired Supreme Court judge M.K. Mukherjee was asked by New Delhi to find out if Bose indeed die in a plane crash in Taiwan, as is widely believed. And if he didn't, then where did he die and how?
"I cannot talk about my report. It has taken six long years to arrive at this finding and it has been an enriching experience," Mukherjee told IANS on telephone from Kolkata.
Mukherjee also said that his visit to Russia earlier this year - to probe reports that Soviet authorities captured Bose after World War II for his teaming up with the Japanese - had been worthwhile.
While Mukherjee refused to talk about his findings, a source in the panel said that "no direct evidence" had been found to suggest that the freedom fighter, known popularly as Netaji, was killed in the plane crash at Formosa, as Taiwan was then known, on Aug 18, 1945, while trying to escape Allied forces. If the Mukherjee panel does say that, it would be contrary to the findings of two earlier official panels - the Shah Nawaz Khan Commission of 1956 and the G.D. Khosla Commission of 1974 - that concluded that Bose did die in that crash.
