Johannesburg (South Africa):
A fully grown male baboon has been roaming the East Rand for the past three weeks, evading capture by spending each night on the roof of a different block of flats, police said on Thursday.Inspector Prudence Mvelase said the animal was first spotted on the roofs of flats in Alberton about three weeks ago. However, it was believed to be in Germiston for the past three days."It moves around a lot and this has made it difficult for the animal to be captured. It is quite big, about 60kg, but it is not dangerous," Mvelase said.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Germiston has set up traps for the baboon on buildings where it had been spotted.Delport said the baboon could have escaped from the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve or from a reserve near Pretoria.
He said it was possible that the animal had been kicked out of a group and was searching for a new group.
