Grand Rapids, Michigan (US):
The mayor of Grand Rapids says he can't say what he knows about a possible downtown development project because he signed a confidentiality agreement.
"There is really nothing I can say, legally," says Mayor George Heartwell.
A few details are known about the possible project because real estate agents representing the out of town developer have approached property owners. Some are asked for an option to buy. Others get a purchase offer.
The owners of nearby Custer Office Environments on Grandville Avenue say they were approached with a purchase offer.None of the property owners say they know who the developer is or why he wants their land.
The mayor says he assumes the developer is also interested in the 19 acres of city owned riverfront property in the neighborhood. Without directly discussing the mystery project, Heartwell says city planners want a "mixed use" development on that land. The real estate company representing the developer says more details should be made public in 30 to 45 days.
