Sanaa (Yemen):
The spectacular mass escape of 23 al-Qaida prisoners from the central intelligence prison in Yemen earlier this month is still shrouded with mystery amid suspicion of involvement of senior security officials.
The escape of 'the most dangerous al-Qaida operatives' placed Yemen is an embarrassing situation vis-Ã -vis the United States and the world, especially because it is the second time that the same prisoners have managed to flee.
Deputy Interior Minister Gen. Motahar Masri said during joint Yemeni-British military maneuvers which started in the Yemeni desert Thursday 'I confirm that the investigation is continuing and the security agencies will be able to re-capture the fugitives.'Washington, concerned about the escape of the masterminds and terrorists behind the attack on the USS Cole which killed 17 U.S. servicemen, strongly suspects complicity by members of Yemen`s Political Security Service.
Yemeni security forces launched a nationwide campaign to recapture the prisoners, including tightening border controls, setting up checkpoints on main roads and distributing pictures of the escapees in all provinces. U.S. warships based in Djibouti are reportedly streaking Yemen`s territorial waters and monitoring ships sailing in and out of Yemen to prevent possible smuggling of the fugitives out of the country.
Among the escapees is the mastermind of the attack on USS Cole, Jamal Badawi, who led the first escape operation in Aden.
