Entwistle Pleads Not Guilty in Deaths of Wife, Baby

An unemployed computer engineer from Great Britain was arraigned today in the shooting death of his American wife and infant daughter in Massachusetts.
Neil Entwistle, 27, was arrested last week at a London subway stop, three weeks after Rachel Souza Entwistle, 27, and their 9-month-old daughter, Lillian Rose, were found dead in the family home in Hopkinton, Mass.
He pleaded not guilty in Framingham District Court today and was ordered held without bail. The case, likened by many in the media to the 2002 murder in California of Laci Peterson and her unborn son by her husband Scott, has drawn worldwide attention.

However, unlike California — where Scott Peterson is on death row — Massachusetts does not permit capital punishment.
The mandatory penalty for first-degree homicide in Massachusetts is life in prison without parole. Eliot M. Weinstein, Entwistle's court-appointed lawyer, called the incident a "very serious tragedy." As Entwistle arrived at the courthouse today, wearing shackles and a bulletproof vest, a passing motorist called out: "Burn that baby killer!" Entwistle kept his head low as officers escorted him into the building.
