The NSW Coroner was "completely unable to accept" Keli Lane's story about the disappearance of her two-day-old daughter and has recommended a murder investigation be carried out into the child's death. On the final day of an inquest into the suspected death of missing baby Tegan Lane, Coroner John Abernethy delivered the shock finding that the child "died on or about 1996".
While acknowledging it was possible Tegan Lane could still be alive, he told Westmead Coroners Court in Sydney yesterday he was "comfortably satisfied" the child was dead. Tegan Lane was born to Keli Lane at Auburn District Hospital in Sydney's west on September 12, 1996, the inquest heard. She was the second of three children Ms Lane had given birth to in the 1990s which she kept secret from family, friends and lovers. The first and third children were given up for adoption in 1995 and 1999.
Just two hours after she discharged herself from Auburn hospital on September 14, Ms Lane attended a wedding in the northern suburb of Manly with her then boyfriend, footballer Duncan Gillies. Tegan - who was only two days old when her mother checked out of hospital - has not been seen since that day.
