Manila (Philippines):
A joint congressional inquiry has come out with a revised report that admits it has failed to unravel the mystery of the “Hello Garci” controversy.
The 18-page report by five House committees, made available to the Inquirer, said that the 14 hearings attended by 16 witnesses “only raised more issues and answered none.”The inquiry was mounted following the release in June last year of wiretapped phone conversations purportedly between President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former Election Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano.
The opposition said the recordings were evidence that Ms Arroyo cheated in the May 2004 elections. The President has denied the allegations and in September last year, her dominant allies in the House killed an impeachment attempt against her that stemmed from disclosures in the wiretaps.
The inquiry report recommended continuing the investigation into the possible flight abroad by Garcillano and the “removal of officials of concerned agencies should it be shown that they had intentionally allowed Garcillano to escape.”
