Church destroyed in mystery blaze

Firefighters were today still tackling a huge fire which destroyed one of Norwich's best known churches.At the height of the fire, 90 firefighters were battling the flames at the Mount Zion Church Family Life Centre in Heartsease as temperatures inside the building, largely made of timber, reached 1,500C.
This morning crews were still damping down as crime scene investigators looked for clues as to what started the blaze.A group had been using the building last night, introducing new Christians to the church.
The building was closed at about 9.45pm and about half an hour later, the alarm was raised. Nobody was hurt.Fire crews from as far away as Stalham and Wymondham were called to help crews from Sprowston, Hethersett, Wroxham, Norwich and Earlham, with 15 engines and a support units deployed to the scene.The church cost £1.2 million when it opened in 1996 and would have celebrated its 10th anniversary in April.
