Police arrested a 74-year-old man Saturday on suspicion of setting JR Shimonoseki Station in Yamaguchi Prefecture ablaze.
The suspect, identified as Kyuemon Fukuda, with no fixed address, has admitted to setting a fire in a warehouse near the station with a cigarette lighter, and told investigators he did it because he was "hungry and upset."
The fire, which broke out at around 2 a.m., destroyed the wooden station and a nearby lodging facility for JR employees. There were 35 JR employees on night duty and three other workers in the station and the lodging facility at the time, but no one was injured as they all escaped.
