Medora, North Dakota(US):
Decades after a Montana girl was found murdered here, her family has new hope that maybe they’ll get answers in the case.
North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says a recently created cold case squad can generate new information in some of the state’s unsolved crimes. Included in that list is the case of Lora Jean Dugan, 14, of Huntley, whose body was found by a local rancher in the Badlands southwest of Medora on April 30, 1972.
On April 7, 1972, Lora Jean, described as being 5 feet, 6 inches tall, slender, and having brown eyes and wavy brown hair, set out from Huntley, hitchhiking eastward. Her parents’ recent divorce is thought to have been a factor in her leaving home.
The girl had been stabbed and strangled, and there were marks on her wrists indicating her hands had been tied together, according to a 1972 report in the Pioneer. Family members suspect that Lora Jean had been sexually assaulted.
