A fat-blocking pill received a regulatory endorsement, but diet drugs can be dangerous.A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel voted 11 to 3 Monday to recommend a GlaxoSmithKline diet drug be available without prescription.The panel recommended orlistat, a drug that blocks the absorption of fat, be sold over the counter.
The FDA almost always follows advisory panel recommendations.But there are concerns about what would happen if the drug were taken in combination with other specific medications, The Wall Street Journal reported. And consumers tend to flock to what are seen as easy weigh-loss solutions.
