The mystery surrounding UW-Stout's bell tower has been solved. A mystery in Menomonie has been solved after 37 years thanks to a confession from Hollywood.In 1969, the famous letter "S" on UW-Stout's bell tower was stolen.
Now, one of the school's alumni says he did it.John Clavin graduated from UW-Stout in 1970 with a fine arts degree. Alumni Director Sue Pittman recently received a letter with Clavin's confession. He described how he and two of his friends removed the original "S" one night and tossed it into the Red Cedar River.
"He said, 'Honestly, we were not doing it to be malicious or anything else. We really thought we were beautifying the campus,'" says Sue Pittman. "He said, 'It was such an ugly 'S'.
