San Diego, California (US):
A Mexican man pleaded not guilty Monday afternoon to conspiracy to smuggle drugs in connection with an elaborate cross-border tunnel that stretched half a mile from Tijuana to Otay Mesa.
Carlos Eugenio Cardenas Calvillo was arrested in Otay Mesa on Saturday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and is charged with conspiring to import a controlled substance. The plea was entered in San Diego federal court and prosecutors asked Judge Leo S. Papas to order that Cardenas be held without bail.
The judge said he will consider the request at a hearing Wednesday. Prosecutors told the judge the 44-year-old Cardenas is a risk to flee the country. No other arrests have been announced in the case and authorities said the investigation is continuing.
