Yak jerky, duck gizzards and tongue, freeze-dried ice-cream for dogs, bangles made from goat's toenails and a monkey scrotum for medicinal purposes are among the strange items intercepted by Australian Quarantine officers at Sydney Airport. The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) intercepts a large number of odd and potentially dangerous items that find their way to Australia.
Quarantine Officers at the Qantas Mail Handling Unit and the Clyde International Mail Centre screen all 150 million items of international mail sent to Australia each year intercepting about 80,000 high-risk items.
Among those were five giant African snails each the size of two cricket balls and weighing up to a kilogram.
These giant snails, recorded as attacking at least 500 species of plants, including gum trees, were brought to Australia along with a dead bush rat meant for a celebratory barbecue.
