Livermore, California (US):
Investigators are puzzled by the source of two mercury spills in the same Livermore neighborhood since November.
The latest toxic spill was reported Wednesday on the 900 block of Olivina Avenue when thousands of tiny silvery mercury beads were spotted in the street's gutter. Livermore-Pleasanton Fire and the federal Environmental Protection Agency were called in for cleanup and investigation.
The fact that a similar amount of mercury -- less than a cup was found Wednesday -- was found a block away at Rincon and Lambaren avenues on Nov. 7, makes this case highly unusual said Richard Martyn, of the EPA.
In 30 years with the EPA, Martyn said he has never had two cases in a residential neighborhood occur in such a short time period and believes they are connected.
