Winona, Minnesota (US):
Merchandise is flying off the shelves at Winona’s Pieces of the Past. Literally.Just last week, Carol Loshek was standing in the middle of the Second Street store when she saw a votive candle sail off a display.Loshek, who has worked at the home furnishing store for about a year, recognized the work of the building’s ghost.
No one has seen the ghost, but for store owners Cheri and Duane Peterson, it’s a regular presence since they bought the nearly 150-year-old building in 1999.No one has reported seeing the Pieces of the Past spirit, but from the beginning, Cheri Peterson said she would hear footsteps above when she was working alone in the basement.
Last year, the Petersons rigged the front door with toy goblins that shook and screamed when set off by a motion detector. One afternoon, an employee working in the basement heard the goblins go off and came upstairs to find no one in the store. She went downstairs, where she heard the goblins again.
This time, she noticed that the automatic chime that signals the door opening did not go off.
She went upstairs and again found no one.
