Auckland (New Zealand):
United States officials are working with police to see if a US soldier was murdered in New Zealand more than 60 years ago and buried in an Auckland property.
A spokeswoman for the US Embassy today confirmed police had been in touch with them over claims that the body of a soldier stationed in New Zealand during World War 2 was buried in the backyard of a property in suburban Ponsonby.
An Auckland newspaper reported today that the claims came to light following the death of a man who told his family that he was the killer.
The man was believed to have fallen out with the serviceman over a woman and killed him in a brawl before burying his body in a property in Ponsonby.
