While police and other government officials were at a loss to explain the origins of the syrup-like odor that first wafted over lower Manhattan Thursday night, they weren't waffling over a response.
By midday, the Police Department, Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Emergency Management and the Coast Guard were attempting to trace its origins.Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the city had fielded 65 calls from citizens concerned about the sweet smell, last reported breezing west toward New Jersey.
Kelly said the NYPD had tested air around Manhattan and determined that the scent - described as evoking syrup, hazelnut coffee or vanilla cake - was nontoxic.
