Tokyo (Japan):
The masterminds behind the hidden cameras installed at UFJ Bank's ATMs were likely not pickpockets as initially believed, but high-tech counterfeiters who can remain hidden from their victims, Tokyo police sources said.
The mini-cameras, which were positioned to record people entering their PIN codes and their cards, were discovered in September in Tokyo.UFJ Bank officials had tried to reassure customers that it would be really difficult to fabricate cash cards through such a method because the cards' magnetic strips contain security information other than the account number.
Police said the culprits were likely pickpockets who planned to steal the cards after obtaining their victims' PIN codes. But police and experts say it is possible to fabricate cash cards using images recorded on the hidden cameras.
"If one has certain knowledge about cash card's magnetic format, it is technically possible to fabricate a card based on the information on the surface of the cash card using a commercially available card reader-writer," said Tsuyoshi Akazawa, chief editor of magazine Radiolife, published by SansaiBooks Co.
