Mystery Object Damages Vehicle On I-485
Charlotte, N.C.(United States):
Something slammed into a man's car on Interstate 485. Now a huge dent covers its hood, but no one is sure what did it.
"I didn't have time to swerve or anything and it just, wham, right on the hood," said motorist Dennis James.
James was on his way to work early Tuesday morning, driving on I-485 near the South Tryon exit, when he saw something big and round land on his car. He thought someone had thrown a manhole cover from a freeway overpass.
"I kept going. I didn't stop because if someone did throw something off, then I don't want to stop because anybody crazy enough to do that might do something else, too," said James.
The impact was so hard, it crushed the hood and left a deep imprint.
Investigators believe a rubber disc lying on the side of the road hit the vehicle. Rubber discs are used to anchor down orange construction barrels.
Construction is currently under way to add one lane in each direction on I-485 between I-77 and Arrowood.
The Department of Transportation said the contractor, APAC, is supposed to check the barrels on a daily basis and remove debris.
When the DOT was told about James' vehicle damage, they said they would notify the contractor to immediately to take care of the problem area.
