Mystery Fever Shows Up On Dengue's Heels
New Delhi (India):A mystery fever may well be the next big thing to hit the Capital. Over the past fortnight, a few cases of patients with symptoms of fever, bodyache, headache and a low platelet count have been reported at AIIMS, but the patients have not tested positive for dengue, malaria or typhoid. Most of these patients are in the 20-50 age group. "A low platelet count is usually seen in cases of dengue or typhoid and sometimes in malaria. But these patients have not tested for any of these illnesses," said a doctor at the hospital. While doctors are tight-lipped about what the ailment could be, some say it may either be a new virus or a mixture of existing viruses, not tested for on a routine basis. At present, the platelet count in these patients is low, but not low enough to cause bleeding which can happen in case of dengue.Vividha KaulTimes News NetworkSept 17, 2005
