Miramichi, New Brunswick (Canada):
A patient has been diagnosed with flesh-eating disease at a New Brunswick hospital, health officials confirmed Wednesday. Officials said the patient was diagnosed after being admitted to the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Saturday. "I can confirm one person was admitted with Group A streptococcal infection . . . necrotizing fasciitis or flesh-eating disease," Sonia Green-Hache, spokeswoman for the Miramichi Regional Hospital, said Wednesday.
Flesh-eating disease can be caused by a number of bacteria, not unlike those that cause strep throat and rheumatic fever. Symptoms include fever, an unwell feeling and redness, as well as severe pain at the site of an infection such as a minor wound, small cut or bruise. The disease is extremely rare, but kills about one in three people who contract it.
