Rotorua (New Zealand):
Blood tests have failed to pinpoint the cause of an illness which has struck down horses at Rotorua's Riding for the Disabled.
About a month ago 15 horses at the Hannahs Bay property developed ulcers and blisters in their noses as well as badly swollen heads and throats. The fate of two horses, in particular, was of concern when swelling restricted their breathing.
It was feared their symptoms were linked to hydrogen chloride gas leaking from a suspected methamphetamine laboratory on Te Ngae Rd. However, further testing by veterinarians has been unable to determine a cause. Staff and volunteers cancelled riding for two days because of the horses' illness.
