Manila (Philippines):
A Marine colonel, sacked over an alleged coup plot against Philippine President Gloria Arroyo and holed up inside a military camp in Manila with several dozen other Marines, has urged the public to rally round him.
Colonel Ariel Querubin said he is taking the action in protest at the unexplained resignation earlier in the day of Marines commandant, Major-General Renato Miranda. A Marine platoon led by a lieutenant-colonel later arrived to join him along with an armored personnel carrier with a mounted machine-gun.
The government, which declared a state of emergency Friday over the alleged coup plot, had no immediate reaction to Querubin's action. Witnesses said troops were posted to guard a major expressway out of Manila. Querubin said in a television interview from Marine headquarters that he was holing up inside the camp.
