Mystery surrounds the whereabouts of a central Queensland opal miner who disappeared more than three months ago after abandoning his broken-down utility on an outback track while returning to his camp west of Winton.
The footprints of Paul Laba, 76, were found 13km from the ute and the vehicle's damaged radiator was discovered hanging in a tree a further 5km away. Police do not know if Mr Laba took ill or was injured while walking in the bush, or left the area without telling anyone.
Locals say he may have had a big strike at his opal lease about 100km from Winton and headed off to the "big smoke".
