Kingston (Norfolk Island):
A New Zealand man arrested over the murder of Janelle Patton on Norfolk Island worked as a chef for the Pacific territory's chief minister before the killing.
Glenn Peter Charles McNeill, 28, faced court in the New Zealand city of Nelson as Australian police began their bid to extradite him to Norfolk Island to face a charge of murdering Ms Patton in 2002.The brutal death of the 29-year-old Sydney woman has baffled residents of the tiny island community, many of whom were drawn into the murder investigation. It was the first murder on the island in about 150 years.
Norfolk Island Chief Minister Geoff Gardner said he was shocked to learn of McNeill's arrest on Wednesday, given the New Zealander used to work as a chef in his former restaurant, Cafe Pacifica.
But he insists McNeill would receive a fair trial in the self-governing territory, despite the close-knit nature of the 2,000-strong community, where most people know each other.
