Dying Oak Trees Still a Puzzle

For some in East County it's become an unsettling and common sight -- oak trees by the thousands suddenly turning brown and dying with no explanation, 10News reported.Since the summer, James Baird and his horse, Truckee, have lost their shade.
Six of their seven oak trees, each several hundred years old, have died. In areas near Interstate 8 and state Route 79, rangers say, tens of thousands of oak trees have died, and nobody knows why. On this day, a group of federal and county experts continued their hunt for answers.Samples are taken to be tested later.
Nearly all of the known diseases have already been ruled out.They have found evidence of bark beetles, but it became clear the beetles didn't cause the damage -- they are a symptom, not a cause.
