Rome (Italy):
Two Italian aid workers in Afghanistan have been found dead in their Kabul apartment and the cause of their death remains a mystery, Foreign Ministry sources said here on Thursday .
Iendi Iannelli and Stefano Siringo were found in their beds in the guesthouse of the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO), the Rome-based aid organisation for which Iannelli worked .
Siringo, on the other hand, was an Italian Foreign Ministry employee .Their bodies showed no signs of violence and at first investigators thought they might have died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty heater .
However, Ambassador Jolanda Brunetti, who is responsible for the Italian Justice Office in Kabul, told Italian radio that the heater in the room was electric .
Medical sources in Kabul also ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning but told PeaceReporter, an online news agency linked with Italy's Emergency aid organisation, that the two Italians "do appear to have been in some way poisoned" .
