Bird flu Spreads to India: Authorities start culling 8 lakh chickens in a village

Mumbai, Maharashtra (India):
Health authorities on Sunday started culling eight lakh chickens and vaccinating another two lakh fowls to control the outbreak of avian flu in the worst affected Navapur tehsil Of Maharashtra's Nandurbar district.
Two more persons were admitted to hospital due to suspected bird flu while around 2.5 lakh fowls had been culled since last night, officials said.Health officials have launched a house-to-house survey to check whether anyone was suffering from symptoms that could be possible cases of human infection of the dreaded flu.
Besides the health officials, personnel from local bodies and district machinery were also engaged in the operations in about 18 to 19 villages around Navapur.Twenty medical teams have been assigned the task of door-to-door survey.
Two persons from Vajda village, 15 km from Navapur, have been admitted to a local hospital, district officials said, adding that it was being ascertained if they were suffering from symptoms of the disease.Blood samples of the two admitted last night have been sent to National Institute of Virology, Pune.
In Surat, a 27-year old poultry farm owner from Nandurbar district died due to suspected bird flu on Friday.
