Seoul (South Korea):
The Seoul National University (SNU) said on Sunday that it has launched a probe into the work of beleaguered professor Hwang Woo-suk as a first step to verify the authenticity of Hwang's patient-specific stem cell research.
The nine-member investigative commission conducted an interview with Hwang and his staffers, including Prof. Kang Sung-keun and Lee Byeong-chun, at the university's veterinary medicine college in Sillim-dong, southern Seoul.
The panel is expected to announce its initial results at the end of December or the beginning of January, after conducting thorough inquiries into the work of related researchers and coordinators, including Roh Sung-il, head of the Mizmedi Hospital.
The commission, comprising seven SNU professors and two outside experts, had originally planned to quiz Hwang starting next week, but moved its probe forward amid increasing suspicion surrounding the stem sell research.
