Exactly why Phoenix's chief financial officer committed suicide a little more than a year ago will likely remain a mystery.Initially, city officials and his family said Kevin Keogh suffered from a brain-eating parasite he caught while vacationing in Mexico three years before his death on Dec. 8, 2004.
When initial examinations were unable to confirm that diagnosis, the medical examiner sent microscopic brain sections to a neuropathologist for closer inspection. In her report, Diane Karluk concluded that there were no gross abnormalities found in Keogh's brain, but there were signs of acute neuronal injury.
She concluded it was impossible to say definitely what caused the injury but that the findings supported a conclusion that Keogh's unusual behavior could be attributed to an underlying disease. On Dec. 8, 2004, Keogh was driving about 50 mph on Camelback Road in Scottsdale when he climbed onto the roof of his Mercedes-Benz and leaped to his death.
