Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh (India):
At least 25 peacocks were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.
The dead birds found in Bandha village in Gwalior region included peacocks, peahens and baby birds.
Locals in the village, which is surrounded by a thick jungle, first noticed the bodies and informed the police.
Dilip Kumar, District Forest Officer of Gwalior, said that poisonous feed seemed to be the likely cause of such large scale deaths, but was still awaiting a post-mortem report.
"We have recovered 20-25 bodies of Peacocks. We are going to conduct postmortem of the dead peacocks to ascertain the exact cause. But from the preliminary reports it looks that they must have been fed somethingpoisonous," he said.
Officials said the high market price of the exotic peacock meat might have triggered the killings.
Peacock is India's national bird and its feathers, adorned by the mythical Hindu god-king Krishna, are considered auspicious by many of his followers.
