Dumfries and Galloway Police are attempting to find out if the remains are those of Peter Harald Krabbe, who was flying solo from Copenhagen to England.
A large-scale missing persons inquiry was launched in November 1990 when Mr Krabbe's plane got into difficulties and sent out an SOS, giving his last position as between the Mull of Kintyre and the Corsewall Lighthouse, near Stranraer.
Two years later a walker found human remains on the west coast of the Rhins peninsula in Wigtownshire, near Stranraer.A post-mortem was carried out at Dumfries and Galloway Infirmary, but could only establish that the remains were that of an adult male. It was not clear how or when the man died.
