Long Island, NY(United States):
A day after a woman's body was found in the upscale North Shore village of Sands Point, Nassau police said yesterday they know more about how she lived and how she died.
They just don't know her name.
"Our victim appears to be a woman who was well cared for," said Det. Lt. Dennis Farrell, commander of the homicide squad, adding that the woman was beaten to death, with blows to the head and upper body. "She's well-nourished. We don't see obvious indications that she was in any way a drug abuser or someone who was plying the streets. She could have been anybody who lived next door to any one of us - and we're puzzled."
Farrell said the woman, whose body was found by a passerby on Hoffstots Lane and Sloanes Beach Road Saturday afternoon, was between 17 and 24 years old. She carried no wallet, or identification, and does not match the description of anyone reported missing from the metropolitan area, including northern New Jersey and southern Connecticut.
Police on Saturday said they believed the woman was not killed at the site, but that her body was disposed of there. They are hoping the public can help identify her and have scheduled a news conference today, when they plan to release more details, Farrell said.
He said an autopsy completed yesterday indicates the woman was probably killed some time Friday night or early Saturday. Police described her as a strawberry blond who stood 4-foot, 11-inches tall and weighed 103 pounds, with a flower tattooed on her hip and an Irish claddagh ring on her left middle finger. She wore a pink jogging suit. The mystery disturbed residents of the secluded, affluent village which has 900 homes, no businesses, two houses of worship and a 200-acre nature preserve.
