Kurseong, West Bengal (India):
Panic has gripped the residents of School Dara, Sepoydhura, in Kurseong following mysterious pelting of stones and bottles on their houses.
Since the last few days, empty bottles and stones are being thrown at the houses of the people living in the area. The attacks usually begin at 6 pm every day and continue till late in the night, creating tension in the area.
People prefer to stay indoors after sunset for safety. Yesterday, at around 8 pm stones, broken window panes and empty bottles were being thrown at the houses unabated, much to the chagrin of the locals.
On getting information, a police team from Kurseong visited the area and with the help of the local youths started searching for the mastermind of the attack. But their efforts went in vain. It is not yet clear from where the stones were being thrown. Mr Pramod Tamang, a local, said: “On last Wednesday, the first day of the attack, only one house was targeted. But gradually the attacks spread in the entire area and each and every houses are now being targeted.” Mr Suraj Chettri, on whose house the first case of stone pelting took place, has not ruled out the possibility of a divine spirit responsible for the attacks.
Police, while assuring the locals of all sorts of help, said they have started an investigation into the matter. “There is nothing to panic,” said a senior police officer here.
