Lafayette, In (United States):
A day after prominent East Bay defense attorney and TV legal analyst Daniel Horowitz found his wife's dead body in the entryway of their Lafayette home, police are trying to unravel the mystery of who killed Pamela Vitale and why.
"There's nobody in custody right now," said Contra Costa County sheriff's department spokesman Jimmie Lee. "We're still trying to develop a motive, and that's where it's at."
Vitale, 52, was a former high-tech marketing executive who worked at her husband's law practice creating and managing databases. Horowitz, who is leading the defense in the Susan Polk murder trial, called 9-1-1 about 6 p.m. Saturday after he found her body.
The couple was putting finishing touches on a four-story dream home and lived in a mobile home on the sprawling property.
Ivan Golde, an Oakland attorney working with Horowitz on the Polk case and a close family friend, said Horowitz is devastated by his wife's death.
Vitale's slaying is the first homicide in the town since the 1998 killing 46-year-old Janet Daher during a robbery attempt. Daher was stabbed and strangled by two men, who were later convicted of murder.

A native New Yorker, Horowitz has taken on several prominent Bay Area cases. He defended Henry Glover, who was convicted of a raping and murdering 25-year-old Francia Young in a Richmond Park. He was also recently the lawyer for former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko in a money laundering and fraud trial.
Horowitz is also considered a rising TV pundit, having made several appearances on CNN host Nancy Grace's talk show to offer opinions about the Scott Peterson and Michael Jackson trials.
His most recent work in the courtroom is defending Polk, an Orinda woman charged with killing her psychiatrist husband Felix Polk in 2002.
The couple lived in a home in the farthest reaches of the Lafayette hills, near the end of a private, one-lane road. This is a place where only a few cars pass daily and mountain bikers travel to admire the sweeping views of Walnut Creek and Mount Diablo.
