Waitakere (New Zealand):
A woman has been arrested for wasting police time after rescue teams spent hours searching for a 111 caller who said she'd been attacked with a sword.
The 26-year-old woman will appear in Waitakere District Court today charged with wasting police time and assaulting a police officer.
Senior Sergeant Kim Stewart of Henderson police said emergency services were mobilised after a 111 call about 11.30pm last night, but it wasn't until 3am this morning that police were able to track her down.
The female caller had said she had been assaulted by a man, had her wrists slashed by a sword and was bleeding in a carpark in New Lynn, west Auckland.
"She just said she was near railway lines but it's a quite long area and it was not going to be an easy search," Mr Stewart said.
Police did confirm with a mobile phone provider that the calls were coming from the New Lynn area. After hours of searching proved fruitless, further inquiries led them to a home in nearby Avondale.
Mr Stewart said the woman was found uninjured in her bed. She was arrested and charged this morning.
"She has been charged with wasting police time and with assaulting a female police officer who tried to arrest her," he said.
