Ma'meer (Bahrain):
A call for international health experts to investigate mystery illnesses reported among villagers in Ma'meer went out from parliament yesterday.
MPs also called for compensation for villagers, if it is proven that they are victims of pollution.
They also demanded an independent fund to buy equipment and finance research into the causes of pollution in the area. The money should come from industries which have polluted the area, particularly Bapco, parliament decided.
MPs also want a special committee set up, including representatives of villagers, industry, the government, environmental watchdogs and parliament, to assess the situation. They also want Ma'meer turned into an environmentally-protected zone.
A parliamentary probe committee report has blamed the illnesses on a sulphuric compound in the air, which is said to be found in the refining process - pointing the finger at Bapco. Bapco has been urged to open a free clinic for families living nearby.
