Grand Rapids, Michigan (US):
The developers of the multi-billion dollar mystery development project in downtown Grand Rapids say the deal could mean 10,000 permanent jobs if all the phases become reality.
To find out what 10,000 jobs really means to Grand Rapids, 24 Hour News 8 went to one of the experts.
Brian Waters compiles the Grand Rapids area employment numbers for Michigan."The type of job is what I'd be curious about, whether they are low-skilled jobs or high-skilled jobs," said Waters, of the Michigan Bureau of Labor Market Information. In other words, it's not so much the number of jobs that count, but how much those jobs pay. A lower number of higher paying jobs could have just as much impact.
To get a better idea how much 10,000 new jobs would mean, Waters uses numbers given by the actual employers themselves, the payroll employment and the last time the area had a 10,000 job jump.Ten thousand jobs won't mean anything to job hunters who may not have the skills a new employer is seeking.
