The U.S. Coast Guard searched by helicopter for a large, lighted object reported to have fallen from the sky near farm land near Pacific County on Wednesday.
Around sunset, a group of at least five people reported the unidentified object, which they said fell from above in a burst of light, hit the ground somewhere west of Pe Ell with a boom and resulted in a cloud of smoke, said Bob Coster, civilian search-and-rescue controller at U.S. Coast Guard Group Astoria.
The Coast Guard launched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Astoria to search for what it thought may have been a downed aircraft. It searched for an hour before heading back with no signs of trouble and no missing planes reported.
