London (UK):
The whale that swallowed much of the world’s attention by swimming up the Thames lost its battle for freedom yesterday despite a rescue operation of almost mythical proportions.
Last night its 48-hour voyage into the heart of the British people, and media stardom, ended sadly when the whale died minutes after 7pm after suffering convulsions while being taken down the Thames towards the North Sea.

Rescuers had managed to lift the bottlenose whale onto a barge and transport it close to the mouth of the estuary where they were planning to release it. But the animal’s condition suddenly deteriorated and its head started bobbing up and down.
“We realised we’d have to put her down just before she started to die,” said Dr Paul Jepson, of the Institute of Zoology, who was aboard the barge. He subsequently gave the whale a lethal injection after it had died to ensure its suffering had ended.
