Mobile, Alabama (US):
Officials decided Thursday by the process of elimination that the explosion-like sound heard in Mobile and Baldwin counties might have been a sonic boom from an aircraft flying over the Gulf of Mexico.
According to NASA, a sonic boom is the result of an aircraft going faster than 760 mph and breaking the sound barrier.
Residents reported the sounds and quake-like tremors Thursday afternoon from Eight Mile to Grand Bay to Montrose to Wilmer, authorities said. There was no seismic activity to indicate an earthquake, and the sound was not weather-related according to the National Weather Service office in Mobile.
The sound also did not originate with any of the local military bases. No chemical or industrial plants reported explosions either, authorities said. At 4 p.m., officials at the Mobile County Emergency Management Agency said the sound must have been a sonic boom because there was no other explanation.
