Taranaki (New Zealand):
A year-long investigation has been unable to explain why a twin-engined plane crashed in the crater of Mt Taranaki.
A report released today reveals the pilot turned his aircraft directly towards Mt Taranaki less than three minutes before crashing into the summit.
The report, prepared by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC), has no idea why the aircraft veered 20 degree to the right during a flight from New Plymouth to Nelson on November 30, 2004.
But it speculates the turn was probably deliberate, as it would have required positive controlling of the plane to turn it and remain steady on the new track for the next three minutes. If the plane had not been turned it would have missed Mt Taranaki by about three kilometres, the report says.
