Sendai (Japan):
The techniques used to abduct a newborn baby from a hospital here closely resembled those in a Japanese mystery novel, police investigators have learned.
Police said the techniques used by Nobuyasu Nemoto, 54, to abduct newborn baby Shu Yamada from the Hikarigaoka Spellman Hospital in Sendai closely resembled those from the novel "99% no Yukai" (99 percent abduction), by Futari Okajima.
Law enforcers are investigating the possibility that Nemoto used this novel to plan the kidnapping. In the novel, criminals release a smoke canister at a kindergarten and shout "Fire!" to distract the attention of parents, then abduct a young child and demand 50 million yen in ransom. When Nemoto abducted the baby in Sendai, he used a spray can to threaten a nurse at the hospital, and shouted, "Fire!" to the child's 23-year-old mother, Yumi Yamada, before snatching the infant and fleeing.
