Two bodies discovered in northeast Ohio may be those of two New Hampshire children whose father confessed to killing them and burying them somewhere along a 700-mile stretch of the Midwest 2½ years ago, authorities said yesterday.
The bodies were found Thursday along a muddy service road near an aboveground gas pipeline about 2 miles from an Ohio Turnpike interchange.Sarah, 14, and Philip, 11, were shot to death by Manuel Gehring, their father as he fled across the country in July, 2003.
He told police he buried the children wrapped in plastic with duct-tape crosses somewhere along a stretch of interstate between Pennsylvania and Iowa, but he could not pinpoint the spot. The bodies bore duct tape crosses and were located in an area matching the description given by their father.
The bodies are being tested.Gehring killed himself in his cell before he could be tried.A dog on a walk with its owner Thursday suddenly started to dig near a small wood pile and found what appeared to be a makeshift cross and the remains wrapped in plastic in a wooded area near I-80, also known as the Ohio Turnpike, police and the FBI said.
Scott Wilson, a spokesman with the FBI’s Cleveland office, said he could not comment on the gender or age of the bodies.
